Tips

The auto tips below are submitted by Auto Evaluators technicians and our website visitors. We hope you can find a helpful tip here.

Over 50% of vehicles on the road have improper tire pressure (usually too low).

Problems due to improper tire pressure are:

  1. Premature tire wear
  2. Premature suspension wear
  3. Excessive gas consumption
    ...among others

Try to check your tire pressure after it has been driven for several miles. Check pressure more often during cold weather.

Winter Safety - All rear wheel drive Volvo's (240,740,940)

Must have good tires on the back of your Volvo with at least 5/32 of tread. Add up to 200 lbs. of weight (sand tubes or bags) in the back. Try to keep at least 1/2 tank or more of gas during winter driving for better traction and safety if you get stuck in the snow.

Don't forget winter safety items such as:

  1. Shovel
  2. Flashlight
  3. First aid kit
  4. Blanket
  5. High energy snacks
  6. Good working cell phone
  7. Candles - Use the candles at night to light your location and provide some heat in the car between running your engine/heater.
  8. Bright color bandana - Tie the bandana around antenna or shovel handle to stick up in the snow to show your location.

"When replacing the shift lock override micro switch on a 940 do not bother to use the harness that the new one comes with from the dealer. Instead, just de-solder it and re-solder to the existing harness in your car. This will save hours (and minimize dropped parts down the shift well) Good luck."

"A good tip to pass on to customers is the awareness of the flame trap and cleaning or replacing if necessary. Probably a lot of folks with older Volvo's still have the older/original wire mesh trap indicating that this has been overlooked in routine maintenance. Could save seal's on a lot of the older Volvo's by relieving the pressure that builds up in the crank case, plus you guys sell new ones. Visit www.brickboard.com one of the best locations on the net for us Bricksters."

"I have a suggestion about timing belts. Check them at about 30,000 miles. If it shows cracks or any sign of wear replace it. If your timing belt breaks it could result in costly repairs!"

"This tip concerns corrosion in the fuse box of older Volvo's. To prevent this problem rub a small amount of Vaseline on the connections. This will prevent the corrosion from forming."
